Fanfix and Passes both keep 20% by default: Fanfix on every fan payment, Passes on Creators+, the plan every creator starts on. Fanfix sets your minimum prices and adds 13% to fans' credit card payments. Passes charges 6.5% to 10% for payouts within a business day. Fees

On paper the two cuts are the same. Fanfix keeps "the remaining 20% of every transaction" (creator terms, section 3.2). Passes takes 20% on Creators+, which is where every creator starts. Its terms also take payment processing fees out before the split, and Passes doesn't publish how much.

The differences are around the edges:

  • What your fans pay. Fanfix's payment terms add a 13% surcharge on all credit cards. Passes says a transaction fee "may be added at checkout" and doesn't give the amount.
  • What you pay to be paid sooner. Passes lists +10% for an instant payout, +6.5% for next business day, and 0% if you wait 2 to 5 business days. Fanfix lists no payout fees.
  • The cheaper Passes plan. Passes' Starter plan is 10% + $0.30 a sale, but you have to downgrade into it, you can't go back to Creators+ for 30 days, and the only place Passes states that rate is a December 2023 blog post.

Say fans pay you $1,000 in a month:

PlatformYou keep
Fanfix$800 (and card-paying fans were charged $1,130)
Passes Creators+, standard payoutat most $800, before processing fees
Passes Creators+, next-day payoutat most $748
Passes Creators+, instant payoutat most $720

Payouts

Fanfix gives two schedules. Its FAQ says earnings are processed every Wednesday and usually reach your bank on Friday, with some countries taking 3 to 7 days longer. Its creator terms say approximately 30 days after the end of each calendar month, or another schedule Fanfix offers (section 3.1a).

Passes pays to a bank account or PayPal once you have at least $50 in eligible earnings. Its terms default to every two weeks; its help center lets you schedule every 1 to 4 weeks or request a payout by hand. Standard bank transfers take around 3 days. PayPal payouts can't be reversed once sent.

Who sets your prices

Fanfix has "the sole discretion to set the fees for all Memberships" (section 2.2), and sets the minimum price for each direct message and each piece of locked content (sections 2.3 and 2.4). You can price above the minimums, and you can ask for a change, which Fanfix can accept or turn down.

Passes lets you set your prices. Every payment has to be at least $3.

Who answers your messages

If fans pay to talk to you, this matters more than the fee.

Fanfix's creator terms say "Creator" includes agents a creator hires to help manage or operate the account. Under Fanfix's own terms, an agent running your account counts as you.

Passes' terms are more direct with fans. Under "Account Management," they say some creators use agencies or individuals to run their accounts, including "answering of messages sent to the account," and that Passes isn't responsible for making sure a fan is talking to the creator.

What each one is best at

  • Fanfix has a large creator network, a membership product and weekly payouts. If memberships are most of what you sell, it's built for that.
  • Passes does more in one place: subscriptions, messages, unlocks, livestreams and merch. It pays out next-day or instantly if you'll pay for speed, and its referral program pays you half of Passes' cut from a creator you bring in, for 3 months.
  • Hotly does one thing: fans pay to write to you, you set the price, and you reply when it suits you.

Using Hotly next to either one

You don't have to give anything up. Keep your posts and memberships where they are, and give paid conversations their own Hotly link.

If you're on Fanfix, one rule to know: its creator terms say you can't use your Fanfix account to promote other monetization platforms (section 2.5), and Fanfix can hold back that month's earnings if you do (section 3.1c). Share your Hotly link from Instagram or TikTok instead.

Questions

Which takes a smaller cut, Fanfix or Passes?
By default, neither: both keep 20%. Passes also takes processing fees out first and charges 6.5% or 10% for faster payouts. Fanfix adds a 13% surcharge to fans' credit card payments. Passes' Starter plan is 10% + $0.30 a sale, but you have to downgrade to get it.
How do Fanfix and Passes pay creators?
Fanfix's FAQ says weekly, and its terms say about 30 days after each month ends. Passes pays to a bank or PayPal once you have $50 in eligible earnings, every two weeks by default.
Can someone else answer fans on my account?
On both, yes. Fanfix's terms count agents who help run your account as the creator, and Passes' terms tell fans an agency may be answering a creator's messages.
Can I use Hotly with Fanfix or Passes?
Yes. Keep posts and memberships where they are, and add one Hotly link for paid conversations. If you're on Fanfix, share that link from Instagram or TikTok, since Fanfix's terms bar promoting other platforms on your Fanfix account.

Keep your posts. Give conversations their own link.
